Parliamentarians call for the UK to leave the Energy Charter Treaty

Ahead of COP 28, parliamentarians have been calling for the UK to leave the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), due to concerns the treaty is actively preventing climate action.


Watch P4P Chair, Baroness Hayman ask about Government progress made in reviewing UK membership of the treaty, which was announced in September.

Today, Baroness Hayman asked the Minister again about the progress made in reviewing UK membership of the ECT.

Update February 2024

On 9 February in answer to a written parliamentary question, Lord Callanan responded to Baroness Hayman to say that would inform Parliament of the outcome of the Government's considerations in "due course". On 22 February the Government announced that the UK would indeed withdraw from the treaty.
